A 28-year-old Volkswagen T3 Syncro van gets turned into an electric vehicle

There’s no denying that the car industry is nowadays experiencing a massive shift towards electrification. It all began with Tesla, then Mercedes, Audi and BMW caught on, followed by all the others. Similar trends can easily be found in the commercial vehicle segment, where Volvo Vera, DAF CF and even the heavy Tesla Semi truck are expected to enter the market soon.

As it now turns out, the same happens with retro cars. Alexandra Perfettini and French engineer Remi Pillot turned this 1990 VW T3 Synchro into a full-fledged all-electric van, thus proving to us all that “old” doesn’t have to mean “harmful to nature”.

The car packs a Siemens engine rated at 110 hp (82 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb·ft) of torque, connected with a 42.5 kWh traction battery. Its driving range borders on 200 kilometers (125 miles).

Alexandra and Remi want to use their modded vehicle to make a 50,000-kilometer (31,000-mile) journey all over the world. They plan never to have to use wall sockets for charging it, either. Instead, they hope to be able to make do with the solar panels mounted on the roofs of the van and its trailer attachment.
