Ford's most powerful mass-issue Mustang debuts with 700+ hp

Mustang Shelby GT500, Ford’s most extreme mass-produced muscle car to date, celebrated its premiere at the Detroit Motor Show yesterday. Equipped with a 5.2-liter V8 monster of an engine, it produces in excess of 700 hp (522 kW) straight off the factory line.

You can easily tell the new Shelby GT from its predecessors by the air intakes that are twice as large as before, a hood cover with an enormous hump, two grilles in the front bumper center designed to look as a single grille, and larger air vents at the sides.

The GT500 incorporates a number of one-off technologies and solutions, including the reinforced connecting rods and the aluminum engine housing with larger oil/liquid flow grooves.

For the first time in history, the Mustang series ships with an optional semi-automatic transmission. The seven-speed DCT box supports five modes of operation and only takes 100 milliseconds to switch between gears. While Ford doesn’t quote any precise acceleration figures, it says the car needs around three seconds to get from zero to 60 mph (100 km/h).

The Mustang Shelby GT500 also sports heavy-duty Brembo brakes with large 16.4” (42-cm) discs, active shock absorbers, and tweaked suspension.

Sports car enthusiasts have two option kits to choose from, the Handling Package and the Carbon Fiber Track Package. The former comprises a spoiler with a Gurney flap and adjustable front suspension struts. The latter includes pro-grade tires, carbon rims, a carbon rear wing and a front splitter made of the same material. Installing the Carbon Fiber Track package necessitates removing the rear seat row first.
