2019 Nissan Serena facelift almost ready to rumble in Japan

The current – fifth – generation of the Nissan Serena minivan has been around in 2016, so the time was ripe for a moderate facelift. Predictably enough, Nissan delivered.

Most of the changes are purely aesthetic. There are new headlights and radiator grille, and you can now choose from a wider assortment of available colors. From the technical point of view, the newcomer has little to show to tell it from the previous generation. Most importantly, the engine range remains unchanged.

You may still choose between two hybrid configurations. One of these comprises a 2.0-liter gasoline V4 rated at 150 hp (112 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) of torque and a tiny electric engine contributing 2.6 hp (1.9 kW) and 48 Nm (35 lb-ft) of its own. The only available transmission type is IVT.

The other one is called e-Power and incorporates a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with 84 hp (63 kW) and 103 Nm (76 lb-ft) of torque paired with a potent electric motor rated at 136 hp (100 kW) and 320 Nm (238 lb-ft).

Ranking 4th nationwide with around 100,000 vehicles sold in 2018, The Nissan Serena MPV is extremely popular in Japan. The prices begin close to U.S. $23,500.

The 2019 facelift will arrive in showrooms before the end of the summer.
