Video: 1967 Chevrolet El Camino gets redone three times over

When someone is about to customize their car, they usually have a rather specific set of changes in mind – a plan, even. Chris, the owner of this ancient Chevy El Camino, admits in this AutotopiaLA video that his planning horizon isn’t that great.

Apparently, his original intention was to turn his vintage pickup truck into a badass dragster. To that end, he threw away the stock V8 and put a 7.0-liter Camaro V8 in its place, partnering it up with a four-speed auto gearbox. The elation didn’t last long, however: the car kept losing at the drag strip. This is why Chris decided to carry out another swap, this time around to a 8.6-liter Dartblock V8 with plenty of forged parts, a nitrous system and whopping 1,200 hp (895 kW) at the crank.

After a few years driving this monstrosity, he felt fed up with the build and swapped the extreme drag-racing mill out yet again for a relatively tame LS3 V8 rated at 538 hp (395 kW). While he was at it, he installed coil-over suspension springs, Wilwood brakes and overhauled the interior for added comfort. In the end, the 53-year-old truck once again began to make him happy.
