RM Sotheby’s just sold a 53-year-old Toyota 2000GT coupe for a logic-defying $912,000 USD. Let’s zoom in on the exotic and see what makes it so special.

The automaker had produced 351 such vehicles from 1966 until 1970, and only 62 made it to the United States. This specific example had belonged to professional racing driver Otto Linton for 30 years until an authorized Toyota dealership bought it out in 1998. In 2006, a car collector acquired it and slightly restored to take it to a 2007 car show dedicated to the 50 years of Toyota Motorsports.

Most of the cars came equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW), as well as a five-speed manual transmission. The top speed amounted to 220 km/h (136.7 mph), which was quite a formidable acceleration back at the time.

Speaking of expensive Toyotas, the pedestal is held by yet another 1967 model year 2000GT coupe painted yellow. It went on sale seven years ago fetching the seller 1.2 million USD.
