9th-gen Nissan Sentra clings to old tech

Nissan has formally introduced the new generation of its Sentra sedan in the United States. The car looks and feels fairly modern, although a closer look may convince you it’s stuck in the past.

Starting with the front fascia, it still sports the characteristic V-shape, but it’s now formed by contrasting front bumper inserts and not the grille outlines. The DRLs at the sides are also installed at an angle, and the lights all around sport new LED patterns. Those looking for an extra bit of visual punch will be able to opt for a sportier trim called SR.

The company also mentions wheels up to 18 inches large and a better drag ratio. The car stays roughly the same size and is only 10 mm (0.4”) longer than the previous generation.

A peek inside reveals a pair of 12.3-inch displays, a reworked HVAC touch panel that Nissan claims cannot be found in any other car of this price segment, and a new steering wheel. The transmission selector stays the same, though, and so do the oversized climate vents. The automaker argues that the vents should remind us about the previous generation, but it sounds a bit odd because those were round instead of rectangular.

What can almost be mistaken for a decent mid-life refresh falls apart when you look under the hood. The U.S.-spec Sentra clings to its decade-old 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine only good for 151 PS (149 hp / 111 kW) and 210 Nm (155 lb-ft) of torque. The company points out an improved CVT transmission with an added Sports mode, a body that’s 6% more rigid than before, superior dampers in the suspension and more efficient noise proofing throughout. It also mentions a different steering mechanism damper that should hopefully reduce the vibrations coming from the road. That’s about all, though.

Trim options include a Bose audio system, a sunroof, surround cameras, ambient lighting and heated seats. For the first time on record, the Nissan Sentra can also be optioned with a wireless charger for smartphones.

The first deliveries will be made at the end of the year, and all prices are pending.
