Rolls-Royce recalls 1.3k cars that need wrap glued onto their gauges

Rolls-Royce will be recalling 1,305 Ghost sedans manufactured for the United States in 2020–2022. According to the NHTSA, the single-layer tempered glass covering the instrument cluster in these cars can shatter in a collision and inflict additional injuries on the passengers inside. A simple protective film is going to address the issue, Rolls-Royce believes.

Apparently, the British luxury automaker first learned about the issue in May 2020, when a high-speed crash test conducted on factory premises showed the dash screen shattering after a lateral impact. The company initiated an internal investigation that found the risks ‘negligible’, so no recall was announced.

However, in late 2022 and early 2023, the Ghost models started coming out of the factory with more robust dual-pane glass installed. The company decided to play it safe and recall the previously released sedans for a quick fix. All owners of Ghost cars made between February 17, 2020 and December 8, 2022 are asked to visit their nearest care center where their displays will get reinforced with a special anti-shatter film.

Rolls-Royce emphasizes that it is unaware of a single incident related to the case.
