Rumor: Tesla working on a Cyber-SUV

Tesla Inc. hasn’t revealed much about its state of affairs lately, but there are indications that the company has been working on an SUV inspired by the Cybertruck, as well as a smaller-sized electric pickup.

The statement comes from Teslarati, which in turns quotes Tesla Engineering Director Franz von Holzhausen. Asked about the company’s plans, he said “many innovative and fun things” were on the way. He refused to answer directly whether the company was preparing to launch a full-fledged off-roader based on the Cybertruck platform or a mid-size truck, but said, “Those are definitely things we’ve considered. Wait & see is probably the best way I can answer that.”

Teslarati calls it “a big hint” that both models are already in development. It also argues that there is plenty of demand for both vehicles on the North American market. An EV in the same segment as the Chevrolet Tahoe or Ford Expedition wouldn’t go amiss, the publication points out. The smaller pickup might be a tougher sell in the U.S., but it should have little trouble finding buyers in Europe.

A video teaser released by Tesla a short while ago contained a hint at the electric off-roader mentioned above. You can see it standing in the background in one scene. The jury is still out on whether revealing it was a blunder on Tesla’s part or a deliberate action. If the rumors are to be believed, though, we should hear more about it in the coming weeks or months.
