ACO changes 24 Hours of Le Mans qualification rules

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest (Western Automobile Club, ACO) has rolled out a brand-new set of regulations determining who gets to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, active since 2020.

Over the past few decades, the race masters produced the starting grid of the 24-hour long endurance marathon based on the outcomes of three qualification races summing up to 6 hours total. With the new rules, the entire qualification will take no longer than 1 hour 15 minutes.

The first session will commence on June 10, 2020, and determine six best teams in each competition category. These teams will then enter the second session – the so-called ‘Hyperpole’ – on June 11, essentially a 30-minute-long endurance race during which the teams will be forbidden from entering the pit lane.
