Alfa Romeo Tonale falls yet another victim to microchip shortage

After the debut of the Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept two and a half years ago, we braced up for waiting until the November 2021 launch, because it really felt like something to look forward to. Now, the company has pushed it back ‘indefinitely.’

The first delay was sanctioned by the brand CEO himself when he found the performance of the car’s newly designed PHEV powertrain lacking. The launch was postponed until early next year and the first deliveries to June 2022, but the ongoing semiconductor shortage put an end to those plans once again.

The company says it does not know when the Tonale might finally reach production. Another Stellantis Group SUV – the Maserati Grecale – is likewise affected.

Based on the Jeep Compass chassis, the Tonale is set to hit the assembly lines in Italy – that is, if it makes it though the development hell.
