BMW updating its EV model range

BMW has announced a range of updates coming to its electrified and all-electric vehicle lineup this spring. Models will produce less emissions, charge faster and run farther on a single charge. The M5 engine is also set to lose 40 horsepower, but not in a way that would affect its dynamics.

To be specific, the latest BMW M5 sedan and wagon utilize a hybrid powertrain rated at 727 PS (717 hp / 535 kW). Out of these, a petrol V8 is responsible for 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW). The update will see its output capped at 544 PS (536 hp / 400 kW) to reduce emissions and keep it compliant in Europe. However, the electric system will simultaneously be tuned to compensate for that, resulting in the same total output.

The same tweaks will be applied to the BMW XM and its flagship spec called Label (see video).

As for the iX1, iX2 and iX3, certain modifications of these models will take advantage of an innovative inverter unit to keep power losses to a minimum. As a result, they will gain around 40 kilometers (25 miles) of extra range on average, with a new maximum WLTP-rated at 514 km (319 miles). The iX3 will additionally get 22kW charging capability for faster battery refills.

The first deliveries of these updated EVs and hybrids are scheduled for April 2026.
