Meet Buick Electra E5, a new battery SUV for China

The China Ministry of Industry and IT has added some shots of the Buick Electra E5 to its online patent database along with some parameters. The electric crossover SUV comes built on the Ultium platform by General Motors and draws inspiration from the last year’s Electra-X Concept (see video).

The official spec sheet claims the whole car weighs a respectable 2,570 kilos (5,666 pounds) while sending 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW) to the wheels. The Ultium architecture also finds use in such high-end modern EVs as the Cadillac Lyriq and the GMC Hummer EV, and the company says it supports its entire range of technologies by default. This includes Super Cruise, for instance, as well as many other driving aids.

The length, width and height are specified as 4,892 x 1,905 x 1,681 mm (191.1 x 74.4 x 65.7 inches). This means the SUV is around 25 cm (10 inches) longer than the US-spec Buick Envision, but 30 cm (12 inches) shorter than the Enclave. Its wheels can be 18 or 20 inches large.

Compared to the concept version, the production-ready Electra E5 looks rather dumbed-down with its simpler lighting all around and faux grille at the front. The whole side view is different: what was once envisioned as a sporty coupe-like utility vehicle is now a run-off-the-mill crossover SUV. Car spotters photographed a camo-wrapped prototype of it on Detroit roads earlier this month.
