Daihatsu vows to bring back the Midget truck from the ‘50s

The Japanese automaker will attend the upcoming Japan Mobility Show with a concept car named Midget X in a nod to a popular three-wheel commercial mini-truck that went on sale domestically in the early 1950s. Its successor also looks delivery-focused, but the company has yet to reveal whether it seriously plans to produce it or not.

The general outlines of the concept, its back-hinged doors and round headlights make it resemble the original a lot, but that’s only until you notice the four wheels. That, and the cabin now sports a single-space design.

Based on the images, the Midget X will debut in two different variants – one with a short cargo bed and one with a large box making it look like a microvan. Daihatsu believes that such tiny cars are perfect for the narrow streets of Japanese towns, so if the prototype gets approved for production, it will likely ship in modular form with numerous customization opportunities.

We should learn more right before or during the show.
