A Ford Bronco owner from Andover, MA, noticed last weekend that the roof of his SUV was bent and corrugated in multiple places. He believed two days of cold weather were to blame. Ford conceded and will be carrying out warranty repairs.
The temperatures in Andover fell as low was –23 ºC (-9 ºF) in the two days preceding the incident. The weather warmed up on Sunday, tearing large cracks in the plastic roof of the Bronco and letting air and water through.
The dealership started off with the thing most dealerships try first – refusing to see the case as coverable by warranty. Since the damages were deemed ‘mechanical’ in nature, they were not eligible for free repairs. However, more Ford representatives chimed in later. They ordered a replacement top for the Bronco and even provided a replacement car for the owner for the duration of the repairs.
As sad as the situation looks, it is far from new. Bronco owners have been complaining about roof quality issues for the past two years at least. There were all kinds of reasons for the damage, but the complaints were invariably aimed at the hardtop roof supplied by Webasto. Someone even caught a sneak peek of defective tops lying around at the factory, suggesting low production quality and high failure rate.
