Reports: Ford F-150 Lightning EV range may surpass official claims

When revealing its electric F-150 Lightning truck, Ford promised that it would be capable of covering over 300 miles (483 km) on a charge – but it looks like those figures could be much better still.

After test-driving a pre-production car, YouTuber Marques Brownlee noticed that the company specified the range given a truck bed load of 1,000 lbs (450 kg). With an empty bed, it could go much farther than that.

According to Brownlee, the Ford test crew was able to cover nearly 370 miles (590 km) and still had around 20% of charge remaining. If true, this would mean the truck could do as many as 400 miles (640 km) on a full charge.

The manufacturer did not provide any battery capacity numbers, so we expect those to crop up on spec sheets shortly before the launch. The media speculate that the biggest battery would hold around 170 kWh of juice.

The Lightning comes based on the same platform as the F-150, which remains the single most popular truck in the USA for many years in a row. Differences include per-wheel rear suspension and chassis improvements.
