Genesis previews the Neolun, its next flagship SUV

The Genesis Neolun Concept is a full-size SUV that will first debut at the New York International Auto Show and later become a production car. Some speculate that it might end up named “GV90”. As the premium carmaker’s new flagship, it will likely challenge the BMW X7, the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the Range Rover in their market niche.

Some of the marque’s signature design traits, like the LED stripes and the radiator grille mesh, are present but the overall appearance is more reserved and laconic than one would expect from a Genesis. There are no side mirrors in sight (the SUV relies on video cameras instead) and no door handles. The wheels sport an original design and the running boards extend automatically.

The dimensions haven’t been revealed yet, but the images suggest that the body is over 5 meters (16.1 ft.) long. Despite the size, the concept car only has four seats inside. They sport luxury trim materials and swivel around to face each other. Bulky center consoles with lacquered panels on top divide the seats, and the front console in particular has capacitive buttons built in to access the common in-car functions.

You may notice that there is no instrument cluster in the traditional sense and that the infotainment display in the middle looks too big for just about any car. Another two displays are mounted at the ceiling and can be used by those sitting in the back row. The pylon residing behind the boxy-looking steering wheel might house a HUD projector, but we aren’t so sure. Genesis points out that the car comes equipped with an advanced audio system capable of tuning the interior into an improvised concert hall.

Rounding off the long list of features is an innovative microclimate system based on a special thermal film covering nearly every surface inside. The dashboard, the door panels, the seats and the floor can be set to start emitting heat all at once when you need a quick warm-up.
