Honda’s Motocompacto is a nostalgia-inducing electric scooter

Honda has shared a video dedicated to a newly developed electric scooter called Motocompacto. The name references Motocompo, a folding moped that the Japanese automaker used to make in the early 1980s and bundle with its City hatchback. Like its predecessor, the Motocompacto fits into a medium-sized suitcase when folded.

The electric motor produces 0.67 horsepower (500W) and lets the user reach 24 km/h (15 mph), while the battery runs dry after just 20 kilometers (12.4 miles).

The body of the scooter is rectangular and has niches for the handlebar, the seat and the wheels to disappear into when not used. It measures 742 x 536 x 94 mm (29 x 21 x 3.7 inches) in its folded state and weighs 20 kilograms (44 pounds).

Designed by the U.S. division of Honda, the Motocompacto will be primarily sold in the United States. The automaker hopes that it will be interesting to the owners of the marque’s electric SUVs as a last-mile delivery vehicle. Sales will begin in November, and the asking price is $995.

Back in its time, the Honda Motocompo was also rather compact by moped standards and fitted into a trunk, but was too heavy to carry. It relied on a two-stroke, 49cc engine for propulsion.
