2024 Hyundai Sonata presents engine variants

Hyundai has revealed the powertrain options for the updated Sonata lineup. Only the displacement volumes are official so far, while the specifications remain to be announced.

The lineup actually appears unchanged from before the facelift, with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, a 2.5-liter turbo and a 2.0-liter hybrid system on the list.

The pre-facelift Sonata did ship with all three powertrains mentioned above, but in different regions. For example, the 2.5-liter non-turbo rated at 194 PS (191 hp / 143 kW) was exclusive to North America. Buyers in South Korea could choose between a 2.0-liter engine and a 1.6-liter turbo with 180 PS (177 hp / 132 kW).

The 1.6L option is not mentioned anymore, but there is a new 2.5L turbo mentioned. The current version of that engine makes 294 PS (290 hp / 216 kW) and 422 Nm (311 lb-ft) of torque and is exclusive to the high-end N-Line spec. However, Hyundai insists that the new engine was designed anew for the 2024 Sonata, so its specifications could be different.

As for the hybrid powertrain, it currently consists of a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine and an electric motor together rated at 195 PS (192 hp / 143 kW). The company says that this powertrain will benefit from new features such as the e-Motion Drive and regenerative braking, but stays tight-lipped about any specifics.
