Lucid Meter CEO Peter Rawlinson revealed in an interview with ABC that he wanted to produce a new, more affordable electric vehicle priced close to U.S. $50,000. He added that even cheaper EVs could follow it later on – a statement sure to make Elon Musk slightly uncomfortable.
The current Lucid lineup consists of different versions of the same coupe named Air – check out the gallery and the video below for that one. According to Rawlinson the company had no other choice than to start off with a luxury EV – that’s how it managed to attract investors and ensure financial stability. Now that it has the resources for making cheaper battery cars, it can dedicate itself to precisely that.
Coming up with new, more efficient battery designs may help cut EV production prices across the board. That said, Lucid found that most drivers do not drive too much in a single day, so even a small 25-kWh battery could be viable.
