Check out a new Formula Mazda racecar powered by a Wankel engine

A rotary-engined racer built to participate in the Formula Mazda series (see video) will go on sale in late September, sporting the same styling as Niki Lauda’s Formula 1 ride.

The vehicle was put together in 1996, but only ceased to take part in races three years ago. Its 1.3-liter Wankel engine with a Weber carburetor sends 180 PS (178 hp / 132 kW) to a five-speed manual transmission.

The car also has adjustable brakes, coilovers and sway bars in the suspension, 13-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and AIM dash gauges. Inside, there is a single Sparco bucket seat and a fire extinguishing system.

Curiously enough, the car is finished in red and white and decorated with stickers that make it look like Niki Lauda’s Formula 1 racer. There is even the lettering ‘Niki Lauda’ in italic on the cowling. None of it is genuine, but the seller does not explain why. What we do know is that whoever buys the racecar will be able to peel off the wrap and restore the original look with no issue.

The expected selling price, giving the age and condition of the car, lies between $45,000 and $65,000.
