Mazda unwraps a rotary hybrid and an AI-powered compact

Mazda’s JMS-2025 lineup includes two Vision concepts: the X-Coupe powered by a rotary engine and an e-motor, and the X-Compact, said to possess an “empathic artificial intelligence.”

Starting with the coupe-like SUV, it previews the latest evolution of the company’s KODO design language. Flowing lines, smooth body panels, a long hood and a raised rear end with new taillights and a missing rear window should give you an idea of what’s to expect. The interior leans into the retro aesthetic with round instrument wells and a special steering wheel, but also has ultra-modern features like a long digital center console.

Power for the X-Coupe comes from a rotary engine and a single electric motor. Mazda claims they deliver a combined 510 PS (503 hp / 375 kW) and get 160 km (99 miles) in all-electric mode, while the hybrid range is closer to 800 km (497 miles). All other specifications are unknown, and it’s anyone’s guess whether a car like this is in the plans for production.

As for the Vision X-Compact, the company says it strives to “strengthen the bond between man and vehicle.” To that end, the small hatchback comes equipped with an artificial intelligence that aspires to interact with the driver as their “dear friend.” It can hold a conversation, access in-car functions and suggest routes, essentially replacing the entire infotainment system as we know it, Mazda claims. That’s why the car has no physical buttons, switches or head unit – talk to your friend if you need anything, got it?

Perhaps this design looks less outlandish when you remember that this year’s show’s theme is Intelligent Mobility, and that Mazda itself has been busy implementing IM solutions across its concepts, planning to roll them out onto production cars next. The Vision X-Compact is rumored to be the car that would ultimately inspire the next Mazda 2, but the company itself says it probably won’t reach the assembly line as it is. No comment has been made regarding the powertrain type, either, but the faux grille at the front and the lack of exhaust pipes make it clear that the answer is “electric”.
