Spirit Racing prepares a couple of Mazda MX-5 racers for serious track action

Mazda has announced two MX-5 race car variants coming from its Spirit Racing division. Armed with a host of track-friendly modifications and only differing in the powertrain department, they will enjoy a generous production run of 2,400 units.

Starting with the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster, it packs a 2.0-liter engine and outputs 184 PS (181 hp / 135 kW) to the wheels along with 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque. It tips the scales at 1,070 kilograms (2,359 lbs) and uses a six-speed manual transmission.

The other version has the “12R” suffix to its name and is slightly more powerful at 200 PS (197 hp / 147 kW). It’s also marginally lighter with 1,050 kilos (2,315 lbs) of curb weight. The transmission is the same.

Compared to the run-of-the-mill MX-5, both sport bumper and side sill extensions, a distinct radiator grille, an added rear spoiler and exclusive lightweight forged wheels in black mounted on four lug nuts. The 12R additionally gets racing decals, a front strut brace and branded floor mats.

On the technical front, both models benefit from suspension and steering upgrades, heavy-duty Brembo brakes, Yokohama Advan Neova AD09 tires and performance exhaust components. The interior makes do with sport seats, red accents and some added Alcantara trim bits.

The 12R is the only model to get Bilstein racing shocks, Recaro buckets, a racing intake and a matching exhaust manifold. Heavy-duty pistons and rings allow its engine to rev up to higher RPMs, while a dual-mass flywheel adds to the on-track dynamics. Last but not least, this version takes advantage of a high-efficiency radiator.

Prices in Japan start from 5.27 and 7.61 million Japanese Yen, respectively.
