$20M+ buys you one of the world’s most desired McLarens

Girardo & Co is expecting more than $20,000,000 for an ultra-rare McLaren F1 GTR Long Tail. Produced in a batch of 28 units for racing and nothing else, this car was reworked to be street-legal.

David Morrison, the owner of Parabolica Racing team, acquired this car in 1997. Back then, it was known under the internal designation “27R”. It proceeded to win its very first race at the Silverstone Circuit during the British GT Championship. It then took part in the 24 Hours of the Le Mans and spent some time with Keiichi “Drift King” Tsuchiya. Chris Goodwin, who later proceeded to become a McLaren test driver, called the GTR Long Tail one of the best supercars he had driven in his entire career.

In 2011, the vehicle seen here was sent to Lanzante Limited (now known as Lanzante Motorsport) for a full restoration that cost its owner £110,000. In 2017, it looped back to Lanzante, but with an entirely new purpose: to become a road-legal car.

Among other things, the tuners reworked the steering mechanism to be more manageable on city streets, improved the dampers in the suspension and added some ground clearance. They also replaced the wheels with smaller ones and threw in a less loud exhaust system. The interior had a street-legal F1 parking brake added and a passenger’s seat installed to the left of the driver’s. The regular model had three seats by design – one in the middle and two in the back row.

The McLaren F1 came out in 1992 and stayed in production until 1998. At the end of the century, it became recognized as the world’s fastest production car with a naturally aspirated engine after hitting 391 km/h (243 mph). The record remains unbeaten to this day.

Designed by Gordon Murray, the supercar utilizes a highly modified BMW S70/2 V12 engine with 627 PS (618 hp / 461 kW).
