Mercedes-Benz E-Class gets an Estate version

Mercedes-Benz has complemented the E-Class family with a utilitarian five-door version offering up to 1,830 liters (64.6 cubic feet) of luggage space, air-cushioned suspension and improved multimedia features.

The exterior and the cabin correspond to those of the E-Class sedan with minimal changes. Buyers can specify up to three displays including one for the front passenger. A driver-side video camera comes standard and works as a part of the drowsiness alert system, but can also be used to make video calls when parked. A two-zone HVAC is also included in all trim levels with the option for automatic air recirculation.

Initially, buyers will be choosing from three hybrid powertrains based on four-cylinder engines. The entry-level E 200 spec runs on petrol and outputs 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) alongside 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. The E 220 d chugs diesel and produces 197 PS (194 hp / 145 kW) along with 440 Nm (325 lb-ft). The top rung is occupied by the E 300 e, a plug-in hybrid rated at 313 PS (309 hp / 230 kW) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.

The E 300 e needs 6.5 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) and offers up to 113 km (70 miles) of all-electric range. Other hybrids and six-cylinder options are expected to debut later.

As for the suspension mentioned above, it uses pressurized air tanks at the rear axle to improve driving comfort and maintain consistent ground clearance even when the trunk is fully loaded.
