MG 5, Mahindra Scorpio zero out at a crash test

ANCAP has posted some crash test footage for two new cars arriving on the markets of Australia and Asia soon – the MG 5 sedan and the Mahindra Scorpio body-on-frame SUV. Both have performed horribly and earned zero stars for safety out of five, especially for driving aids.

The test procedure comprised four familiar stages: adult protection, child protection, pedestrian protection, and the performance of any safety assists on board.

During simulated head-on and side-on collisions, the MG 5 driver mannequin experienced severe head and leg injury. Both the driver and the back seat passenger were also found at risk of chest injuries in the same test. Child protection warranted the only halfway decent score (58%), but the rest of the results were much worse. An MG 5 colliding with a pedestrian would likely leave the latter with multiple severe leg injuries, and with the emergency brake being limited and inadequate, the situation looks even more dire. As for the assists, some key features - like blind spot monitoring – are absent altogether. In the end, ANCAP awarded the MG 5 a dismal 13% for overall safety.

The Mahindra Scorpio performed decently at child passenger protection with 80%. However, it was still prone to leave the driver and any rear seat passengers with severely fractured ribs in a crash, and both its hood and bumper were found dangerous for pedestrians. The Scorpio has neither an emergency brake nor any other driver aids on board, which is why ANCAP gave it an extremely low rating in pedestrian safety and zero points in safety assists.
