Meet the Mitsubishi Destinator, a family SUV for select markets

With its rugged looks heavily inspired by the DST Concept, the Destinator will debut at a car expo in Indonesia on July 23 and will ship to the ASEAN countries along with Latin America and the Middle East.

According to Mitsubishi, the body kit is supposed to lend the SUV an “imposing and solid” appearance. A massive front grille, bulky bumpers, widened wheel arches and rugged trims all around indeed make it look a bit like the legendary Pajero. With 214 mm (8.36 inches) of ground clearance, it should be quite a capable soft-roader as well. It lacks a body-on-frame design for serious off-roading, but nonetheless has an approach angle of 21º and a departure angle of 25.5º.

The whole car comes in at 4,680 mm (182.8 in) long, 1,840 mm (71.9 in) wide and 1,780 mm (69.5 in) tall. The wheelbase amounts to a solid 2,815 mm (110 inches). This makes the new Destinator slightly shorter than the latest Mitsubishi Outlander, but the wheelbase is actually slightly longer.

The suspension involves McPherson struts and a torsion beam. Only one powertrain has been announced so far: a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine with 163 PS (161 hp / 120 kW), 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque, variable transmission and FWD.
In addition to its terrain-friendly bumper geometry, the Destinator offers a selection of five drive presets, including Dirt Road and Mud.

Every car will ship with an infotainment system based on two displays 8 and 12.3 inches large, eight Yamaha audio speakers, a panoramic roof, USB ports and 64-color ambient lighting.

Sales in Indonesia will start on Wednesday, July 23. All production will be handled by that country. Right now, we know that the model is expected in Middle East, Latin America and Asia, but it’s worth noting that Mitsubishi unveiled its DST Concept as an international model back in May. As such, it might later reach other markets, possibly under a different name or with different options.
