World’s fastest Mitsubishi Galant goes on sale for $30k

A 31-year-old Mitsubishi Galant VR 4 is up for grabs in the United States right now with an asking price as low as $29,999. The seller claims this specific car set multiple world speed records on the dried-out surfaces of lakes Bonneville and El Mirage in 2006–2009.

Powering the exotic build is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine dialed up to 922 PS (909 hp / 678 kW) at the wheels. It let the car easily exceed 322 km/h (200 mph) and even took it to 360 km/h (223 mph) shortly before it was decommissioned in 2009. The last race was held in November 2009 and saw the Galant smash through 340 km/h (211 mph). Since then, it has been kept in a climate-controlled indoor space, regularly maintained and occasionally started to prevent the engine from jamming.

The record-breaking Galant was co-created between RaVer Motorsport and Smith Automotive. Its main novelty came in the shape of a nearly completely reworked engine retrofitted with Garrett turbos, an intercooler, new pistons, a reshaped cylinder head assembly, a special fuel system and a custom ECU.

In addition to the above, the saloon ended up with a single aluminum bucket seat, a safety cage, a fire extinguishing system and a brake chute. As you have probably guessed by now, it is not street-legal.
