Nissan Elgrand changes generations at last

Nissan has formally unveiled the fourth generation of its Elgrand minivan at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. The preceding generation debuted in the distant year 2010, so there’s plenty to look at.

The exterior of the MPV resembles that of the Hyper Tourer Concept from two years ago – pixelated LED lights, a digital instrument cluster in the cabin and a hybrid powertrain under the hood. It won’t go on sale until next summer, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at the specs.

Power for the new Elgrand is provided by a Nissan e-Power system composed of a 1.5-liter petrol range-extender unit and what sounds like a single electric motor somehow driving all four wheels. We’ll have to wait for details, because that’s all the info we have on the powertrain right now.

The interior features a duo of 14.3-inch displays merged into a single digital console. Modern niceties on board include 64-color ambient lighting and a 22-speaker Bose audio system. The automaker also mentions its standard ProPilot ADAS package, saying drivers will be able to take their hands off the steering wheel briefly when moving under 50 km/h (31 mph). ProPilot 2.0 is slated to become available for the Elgrand lineup later on, bringing with it extended and improved self-driving features.

The current Elgrand generation has been around for a decade and a half, largely competing against the Toyota Alphard. It is obtainable with a 2.5-liter engine rated at 170 PS (168 hp / 125 kW) and a superior 3.5-liter V6. Both use a CVT for transmission, but you can choose between FWD and AWD. Prices in Japan start at the ¥4,000,000 mark.
