Nissan Titan owners sue automaker

Owners of the diesel-powered Titan XD trucks have filed a lawsuit against Nissan in the United States, accusing it of using incorrect engine parts that can lead to expensive repairs. If they win, the company will be facing multimillion losses.

The core of the problem is the five-liter diesel engine that Nissan had put into its Titan lineup from 2016 until 2019. According to the claimants, every truck was erroneously outfitted with a fuel pump designed to work with Euro-standard diesel fuel instead of American-standard.

The European diesel is apparently good enough for the pump to use as a self-lubricant, while its U.S. counterpart is unfit for that purpose. The lawsuit alleges that after a while, pumps running on the U.S. fuel without additional lubrication start to disintegrate and shed metal shavings into the engine internals, putting it out of order.

The seven claimants recount their individual experiences in the text. One of them says the pump catastrophically failed after just 33,000 miles (53,000 km) of use. They were able to get free repairs under warranty, while another claimant, who had run out of warranty by the time the failure happened, was presented with a $22,000 repair bill. Even worse, the insurance company refused to cover these expenses.

The claimants seek various compensations from the manufacturer, including a full price refund not just for the faulty pumps, but also for the trucks themselves.
