In the world of Porsche tuning, the mere notion of engine swap is blasphemy. But it’s hard to feel angry seeing Lanzante’s latest project, the 930 TAG Turbo, which takes a normal Porsche 911 (930) and stuffs it with a 1.5-liter Formula 1 racecar engine.
The car seen here was built for ex-F1 driver Stefan Johansson and tested by Magnus Walker in the video. In order to make it road-legal, the engine had to be detuned from something like 760 PS (750 hp / 559 kW) to 510 PS (503 hp / 375 kW). Even so, the car has plenty of thrust remaining, not least because it weighs just 1,019 kilos (2,247 pounds).
A six-speed manual transmission carries the momentum to the rear axle. The exhaust system is custom and street-legal, too, but the temperamental engine does make it spew flames from time to time.
Further modifications to the original 930 included a new crankshaft, smaller turbos and 25% lower boost pressure. Even with these modifications in place, the car still looks and feels like an actual racer that somehow ended up on a normal road.
Lanzante plans to make 11 such vehicles in total, and this is the example number 8.
