Confirmed: New BMW 4 Series grille is just as hideous as feared

Okay, we own up to going kind of overboard with this one. And it’s not like BMW didn’t tell us that this was coming up, no matter what. But even so, the new faux grille is just… eerie.

Although smaller than the enormous grille on the concept version (watch the video if you dare, or can unsee things), it is still impressively sized and no longer looks like two nostrils. Instead, the impression is that of a mouth – or perhaps a gaping maw, since we’re going poetic anyway. None of us was surprised to see a photoshopped version of the spy pic appear minutes later after it went live, sporting an added number plate reading, “Feed me”.

The other photo revealed today exposes the rear end of the car, and things look comparatively tame there.

Despite much controversy, the Bavarian carmaker had repeatedly stated it was determined to scale up the grille time and again – and that a survey showed potential customers were OK with that. The Chief Designer of the marque called it the new main design highlight of all modern BMWs, perhaps coming to replace the “angel eyes” headlights and the “Hofmeister kink”.

It remains unclear whether the upcoming BMW M3 saloon gets spared the fate of the 4 Series or not. Personally, what would you like?
