Dacia unveils Spring, its first EV

The promised electric SUV with the Dacia badge on it has come into the spotlight, so let’s have a look at it.

The car is still labeled as a concept, and the available information is scarce at best. In fact, all the manufacturer reveals right now is the maximum driving range, which amounts to somewhat meager 200 kilometers (124 miles). The powertrain specs, battery capacity in kWh, charging times, and pricing remain unknown.

On the outside, the SUV looks suspiciously similar to the Renault Kwid, or perhaps to the City Z.E subcompact created with the Kwid at its base and only sold in China. The latter packs a low-end electric motor rated at 45 horsepower (34 kilowatts) and gets up to 271 kilometers (168 miles) of NEDC-rated range from its 26.8-kWh battery.

Just whether the Dacia Spring will go into production in its current form is also not clear. However, given the universal trend towards electrification, this is quite likely. The Spring may be the first EV for the Dacia brand, but its parent company – Renault – already has seven on its lineup.
