Rumor: BMW might be getting an M1-like supercar ready to rumble

BMW M Director Markus Flasch said a little while ago that the company was not planning to design a new supercar, since the M8 series filled out that category perfectly. Apparently, he has changed his mind.

According to the latest statement from Flasch, the company is indeed interested in designing an all-new vehicle that would be unmatched in the current lineup.  It remains uncertain whether it is going to be a supercar comparable to the Mercedes-AMG One or something else. That saud, rumors persist that a production vehicle based on the BMW Vision M Next Concept (featured in the gallery and the video here) is already in the making.

The alleged vehicle might be hybrid or even fully electric, but it is too early to speculate. First of all, the engineers will attempt to design a fully-featured M Series car with worthy acceleration and steering dynamics. The powertrain only comes second to these considerations.

Rumors that BMW M is working on a new supercar have been circulating for 10 years already, ever since the company unveiled the BMW M1 Hommage Concept to celebrate an anniversary of its mid-engine classics, the original M1.
