Spied: Could this be the new Mitsubishi Pajero?

Mitsubishi has begun testing a new SUV on the streets that looks like it could be the next-generation Pajero, Autoevolution speculates based on these spy shots. As an alternative, it could be a modified and improved Pajero Sport, which the company has been testing since 2024.

The test vehicle cuts a boxy profile with nearly upright radiator grille, c-pillars and tailgate. It also has wide rear wheel arches, elaborate bumpers and lots of ground clearance – at least, insofar as the images suggest.

The front fascia and the pillars make it look almost like the latest L200/Triton pickup truck, which it might actually be based upon according to some rumors. If this is the case, we may look forward to a body-on-frame design, AWD and a nice selection of petrol and diesel engines.

Back in early 2024, Mitsubishi mentioned an intention to bring the Pajero back as a proper frame-based SUV with extensive equipment options and an emphasis on comfort. The new Pajero Sport was supposed to become a smaller and more utilitarian alternative. The problem is, the company showed a prototype back then that looked starkly different from the car spotted earlier this week. Perhaps it has been changed since then. At any rate, we should hear more from Mitsubishi soon.

Mitsubishi Europe revealed a product release plan in May that had no mentions of a Pajero, but had a Pajero Sport. It also mentioned two unspecified “international releases”, so there’s still room for speculation.
