Subaru brings back the Rex nameplate for a low-end CUV

The Subaru Rex was an original Kei car that the Japanese manufacturer produced in 1972 through 1992. The name is now making its comeback to the market, but on an affordable crossover SUV.

The new Rex is a five-seater closely related to the Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky, a result of an OEM partnership between the companies. It comes built on the TNGA architecture and has 185 mm of ground clearance. The trunk size is 369 liters.

Unlike its hybrid cousins, the Rex will only ship with a naturally aspirated engine under the hood, which is rated at 87 PS (86 hp / 64 kW) and 113 Nm (83 lb-ft). A continuously variable transmission drives the front wheels.
