8th-gen VW Golf GTE learns to crouch thanks to H&R springs

Several months ago, H&R released lowering springs for the eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golf GTI (see video). Now, a similar upgrade is available for the part-electric 1.4 eHybrid and GTE specs, promising impressive results with both.

It looks like Volkswagen played it safe with the ground clearance of the GTE, because once the aftermarket coilovers are installed, you can drop the ride height by between 40–60 mm (1.6”–2.4”) on the front axle and between 45–70 mm (1.8”–2.8”) on the rear axle. Fine adjustment is available, and you should feel the difference straight away thanks to a much lower center of gravity, reduced swaying and sharper cornering.

The manufacturer stresses that only qualified VW service centers can install the coilovers, because it necessitates modifying the stock adaptive/electronic suspension system with third-party components. The process also involves plugging in a special suppression module to suppress error messages. The full package without the installation will set you back €1,732 in Germany.
