Volkswagen working on a new EV architecture

Volkswagen Group has decided to upgrade its MEB architecture originally designed for all-electric cars. The new version will be called MEB+ and lend itself to a wider variety of car designs with greater battery range. By 2026, the company expects to have a dozen or so new models based on this platform in its portfolio.

The ID.3 (see video), which came out in 2019, became the German marque’s first electric vehicle to benefit from the MEB tech. In its next design iteration, the platform will make use of improved battery cells rated up to 700 km (435 miles) of range. At the same time, the battery pack will support high-power charging, reducing wait time at the terminals.

It is unknown when the first production car based on the MEB+ will debut. The automaker says it is already investing large sums of money into the upgrade.
