VW ID. Buzz will learn to park itself if you teach it once

Volkswagen has updated its ID EV self-driving software to the next version, which will be installed on ID. Buzz minivans first to let them automatically change lanes and park in tight spots.

The improved lane control feature will enable the ID. Buzz to drive itself autonomously down a preselected lane, always making sure to maintain a safe distance from the traffic in front and keeping the average speed at the approximate level set by the driver (can exceed 90 km/h, or 56 mph). More impressively still, the autopilot tech will endeavor to read the owner’s manner of driving and imitate it – for instance, stick to one specific side of the lane. It will also take weather conditions into consideration and calculate the optimal acceleration for sharp turns, Volkswagen reports.

To change lanes, the driver must touch a turn signal while keeping the hands on the wheel. If the system believes the driver is in control of the car and not distracted, it will attempt the lane change.

For parking, drivers will first need to demonstrate to the system what maneuvers are necessary to park at a certain spot (such as your home garage, for instance). This is only necessary to do once – the car will remember the general procedure and will repeat it with the necessary adjustments whenever you ask it to park itself.
