Check out Volkswagen’s new liftback for China

Chinese authorities have published patent shots of the second-gen Volkswagen Lamando, which will apparently move over to a different platform and debut in a new body.

The Lamando model currently available in China has been around since 2014, and represents a sporty-looking mid-size sedan comparable to the Jetta in terms of proportions and built on the MQB platform and tech (watch the video for an overview).

In contrast, the new model switches to a new chassis dubbed the MQB Evo and becomes a five-door liftback with a slanted roof and frameless doors. In a manner of speaking, it now resembles a downsized and simplified VW Arteon. Note especially the fluid outlines and the unusual front fascia complete with giant headlights and a wide air intake.

The car is 4,784 mm long, 1,831 mm wide and 1,469 mm tall with 2,731 mm between the axles. A 1.4-liter turbo engine drives the front axle with 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW).

SAIC-Volkswagen will handle the production. Other details will be revealed later.
