Can a tuned Volkswagen New Beetle RSi be worth €55,000?

Back in 2001, Volkswagen issued a limited high-performance series of its New Beetle compact. Called the RSi, it consisted of only 250 units. Three of these were later tuned by HGP Motorsports, and one was subsequently sold for €55,000. Was it worth it? Let’s see.

For starters, let us review what kind of tech the New Beetle RSi packs straight from the factory. The main highlight is the 3.2-liter, six-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine with four valves per cylinder – quite an atypical choice for this vehicle class. Rated at 224 hp (167 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, it accelerates the car 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 6.7 seconds.

To this, HGP adds a turbo kit that brings the power all the way up to 460 hp (343 kW), or more than twice the stock values. For the Beetle to be able to cope with this newfound strength, it gets a custom-built exhaust system and KW Clubsport 3 suspension.

The rest of the apparent additions – the 18-inch wheels, the gigantic rear wing and the body design reminiscent of the New Beetle Cup – is standard fare for the RSi.

So, what’s your opinion: is this Beetle worth €55,000 or not?
