Volkswagen T-Roc goes hybrid

Shortly before unveiling the second generation of its T-Roc crossover, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer posted a single teaser pic. He accompanied it with an announcement of a “brand new hybrid system” that other VW vehicles stand to get further down the line.

The car in the photo wears a rather provocative camo wrap. It’s black and dotted with all kinds of buzzwords written in the imperative form, like “think”, “train” and “lead”. Overall, it looks identical to the camo-free spy photos we posted earlier.

According to Schaefer, the SUV will be powered by a petrol engine and a single electric motor. They will be able to drive the wheels together or separately. This innovative powertrain design was allegedly discovered by the Volkswagen Group as it tried to study the current needs of the global market. Schaefer claims that some regions, like China and South America, will be particularly interested in this type of car.

A couple of years after the launch of the T-Roc Mk2, the company plans to put the same powertrain into the Golf and the Tiguan. It will be done selectively and only where appropriate, so not all MQB-platform cars will receive this tech.

As for the new T-Roc, it is scheduled for an offline reveal at the IAA Munich expo in September. Knowing Volkswagen, an online premiere may actually take place a few days in advance.
