In an interview with Automotive News, Marketing Director of Ford Motor Company Andrew Frick hinted that the company was interested in adding a sedan to its Mustang model lineup – a first in the history of this muscle car.
According to Frick, the Blue Oval intends to expand the Mustang family in one way or another soon. Sedans may only account for 16 or 17 percent of all vehicles sold in the United States right now, but there were times when they had around 50% of the market to themselves. Ford believes that much of that market is still there, ready to be tapped into.
Frick never specified when the saloon-shaped Mustang may reach the showrooms and what kind of powertrain it may receive. He did point out that the company was interested in keeping the pricing attractive – supposedly under $40,000 before options.
Ford patented the trademark “Mustang Mach 4” last year. It’s easy to speculate that this is what the new sedan (4-door car) will be called. At the same time, the “Mach” part may indicate a relation to the Mach-E SUV. If confirmed to be true, the new sedan may end up not being a muscle car in anything but the name.
Right now, one of Ford’s most extreme Mustangs on offer is the GTD, which has recently refreshed its lap times on the Nürburgring (see video).
