KamAZ Automotive Plant has revealed its plans for the compact-sized all-electric hatchback set to become Russia’s first production EV.
Until late 2022, the Kama-1 will continue to run tests needed to obtain the necessary certificates, including material strength, driving and handling tests. The management of the company will then present a business plan and calculate the investment needed for its implementation. Once the project is deemed financially viable, pricing will be determined and production will start.
The Kama-1 Concept debuted in late 2020. It measures 3.4 meters (133 inches) long and only has 160 millimeters (6.25 inches) of ground clearance, but KamAZ still insists on calling it a compact crossover SUV. Power comes from a 33-kWh battery linked to an 80-kW electric motor. Going 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) takes 6.7 seconds, while the driving range makes up to 300 kilometers (186 miles).
Prices are expected to start around 1,200,000 Rubles, or $16,450 USD at the current rates.
Another Russian-made electric car, named Zetta, should reach production in a few months. It has four motorized wheels instead of an axle-mounted motor.
