Audi decides to go all-electric starting from 2026

The Ingolstadt automaker assures us that all of its newly designed cars will be purely electric in 2026 and onwards, although ICE cars will remain available for several years to come.

We first heard about these electrification plans this spring, but without any specific timeframes. Now, it is official that Audi wants to end all gasoline and diesel powertrain production in 12 years from now.

The strategy is called Vorsprung 2030 and covers multiple countries, with the USA enjoying special attention as a high priority market. Audi admits that it will have to attract large-scale investment in order to carry everything out as planned.

All new Audi EVs utilize Volkswagen modular platforms, but the company stresses that they will still look and feel like Audi cars, largely thanks to superior handling and noise proofing.

Recent premieres included the Skysphere Concept shown in the gallery and the video here. It is one out of Audi’s three new EV design studies meant to preview mass-market technologies. Its main features are a variable wheelbase (you can shorten or stretch it by up to 250 mm / 10 inches) and a high-end self-driving systems. Another prototype – the luxury-laden Grandsphere – will debut live on September 2, 2021.
