Akrapovic endows the new BMW M5 with a deep voice

High curb weight and weak sound are the two frequent points of criticism of the new BMW M5. Exhaust system gurus over at Akrapovic have addressed both issues in their latest product release.

It comes in the form of a performance exhaust system that features large-diameter pipes with special reflectors to redirect at least some of the engine soundtrack back into the cabin. This should help those drivers who like to hear their current RPM without looking at the gauges get a better feel of their M5. And if you aren’t one of them – it’s an automatic car, after all – then you can still appreciate the engine output going up by 7 PS (7 hp / 5.2 kW) and 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) of torque with this new exhaust.

Customers in countries where a petrol particle filter isn’t mandatory may opt for a filter-free system promising up to 12 PS (12 hp / 9 kW) and 16 Nm (11.5 lb-ft) of extra pull. Finally, those looking to shed some weight will appreciate a full titanium exhaust weighing 15 kilos (35 pounds) less than the original.

Do the new M5 sedan and wagon really need these upgrades? Arguably not. Both produce up to 727 PS (717 hp / 535 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738-lb-ft) of torque in hybrid mode, so it’s not like more power is sorely needed. Furthermore, even the sedan tips the scales at 2,445 kilos (5,390 pounds), with its wagon counterpart being even heavier. In other words, it’s a nice option for the rich folks who agree that every little bit helps.

All prices are pending.
