BMW recalls 155k cars over engine failures

BMW has initiated a recall campaign that will reportedly encompass around 155,000 cars with the N52 inline six-cylinder engine under the hood. An issue was discovered in the phase switch logic of the VANOS sub-unit.

The campaign particularly concerns owners of the Z4 Roadster (seen below), assorted 1-Series and 3-Series cars, and X3/X5 SUVs.

This is not the first time the Bavarian carmaker recalls cars with the N52 engine. Back then, the company found that the aluminum bolts holding the VANOS unit in place could deteriorate and weaken, eventually causing a breakdown. The repairs were free and covered by a 10-year warranty for all affected car owners.

Today’s recall seems to be linked to the same bolt issue, which was apparently not completely addressed in some cars. However, unlike a few years ago, BMW no longer mentions any warranty for the replacement.
