$30M Bugatti owner drives it 5,800 km to Pebble Beach

Vehicles like the iconic 1937 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante are too valuable for anything other than sitting in climate-controlled garages – at least, that’s what most collectors seem to believe. Enter Fritz Burkhard, from Switzerland, who realizes that cars are meant to be driven, no matter their value.

The video comes from Supercar Blondie, who claims that the vehicle seen here is worth approximately $30,000,000. It’s now traveled roughly 5,800 kilometers (3,600 miles) from Newport, Rhode Island all the way to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.

The 88-year-old vintage car underwent a full restoration at the Audrain Automobile Museum prior to the long journey. According to Burkhard, a car – any car – must be drivable first and foremost. Age, value and status don’t matter. Sometimes we wish more collectors would follow the same principle.

It is unknown whether the antique ride encountered any issues in transit. It was accompanied by a modern Ford Mustang for the entirety of the journey, though, so we suppose everything went smoothly enough. In fact, Burkhard said he was already planning his next long-distance trip, so it seems like he’s enjoying so far.

The Bugatti Type 57 Atalante is one of the rarest vehicles in existence. It is also one of the rarest Type 57 models ever made, said to come from a production batch of only 17 examples.
