China’s Corvette 07 is not what one might expect it to be

Chinese automaker BYD has shared the first shots of its upcoming full-size SUV named the Corvette 07. The vehicle continues the lineup named after military vessels and is set to debut on August 26, 2022 with up to 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW) of part-electric thrust.

The newcomer boasts pronounced wheel arches, an impressive rear spoiler, wheels sized up to 20 inches in diameter and an original radiator grille. The pattern on the latter simultaneously resembles ripples on the surface of the sea and a traditional national weave, the company points out.

Light diodes all around the grille create its outlines, while a LED strip at its top connects the headlights and illuminates the badge. The interior remains to be shown, but we have a few spy photos in our gallery allegedly showing the Corvette 07 from the inside. There is a three-spoke steering wheel, a modest-sized dashboard and a 15.6-inch swiveling display.

The car is 4,820 mm long, 1.920 mm wide and 1,750 mm tall with 2,820 mm between the axles. In both hybrid specs, it uses a 1.5-liter turbo engine with 140 PS (138 hp / 103 kW). Adding a simple electric motor to it with another 197 PS (194 hp / 144 kW) gets you a front-wheel-drive hybrid. Alternatively, you can go for a 204-PS (201-hp; 150-kW) motor mounted on the rear axle and get AWD. The top hybrid spec produces a total of 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW) and 656 Nm (484 lb-ft) of torque, and needs 4.7 for the standard launch.

The media assume that BYD will open its preorder books at the Chengdu Motor Show on Friday, August 26. The SUV is expected to cost around 250,000 Yuan on average, or $36,400. Keep in mind that neither the date nor the price point quoted here is official.
