5th-gen Chery Tiggo 8 goes on sale in China

Chery has opened the preorder books for its Tiggo 8 mid-size SUV. The fifth generation starts from 93,000 Chinese Yuan for early buyers, who can choose between two available exterior variants.

Depending on the choice, the SUV can be either 4,725 or 4,749 mm (184.5 or 185.5 inches) long. The width stays fixed at 1,880 mm (73.4 in) and the wheelbase at 2,825 mm (110.4 in). The main difference is in the front fascia design, which can either feature a fine-mesh “pixelated” grille framed with stacked headlights or a grille with a coarser chromed pattern and traditional headlights.

Both come with a 10.3-inch digital dash screen, a 15.6-inch head unit and an additional 13.2-inch touchscreen for the rear row. Chery claims that the trimming materials and approaches are different between the two versions, but doesn’t reveal how exactly. The voice recognition software on board listens to commands coming from all four seats for efficiency.

For the engine, the choice is between a 1.6-liter mill rated at 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) and a 2.0-liter block turbocharged to 286 PS (282 hp / 210 kW). The former comes with a seven-speed preselector DCT, while the latter uses an eight-speed automatic. All-wheel drive and camera-based adaptive suspension are listed under options.

Further trim options include up to eight airbags, a driverless self-parking system, active noise cancelling, and folding tables for the rear row occupants. The front seats get heating, ventilation and massage in all four available trims. The top trim costs 130,000 Yuan with all options ticked.
