Check out the ‘Vette that hit 255 mph (410 km/h) a third of a century ago

A record-setting 1988 Chevrolet Corvette Callaway SledgeHammer is now up for grabs at an online auction, having been called the world’s fastest road-going car back in the time and staying dethroned for 11 long years.

Callaway Cars configured the coupe for the record acceleration run that spanned a 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) long track in Ohio, USA. The top speed recorded was 410 km/h, or 255 miles per hour.

On the outside, the SledgeHammer boasts a new front fascia, special aerodynamic trim, a rear spoiler, magnesium wheels, and quad exhaust tips. The car had received a purpose-made Goodyear tire set for the race, but those are no longer available. The shocks are electronic, and the brakes have been upgraded as well.

Inside, there are bucket seats with power adjustments, five-point safety harnesses, and a fire extinguishing system. The climate control system is original, and there is a Delco Bose audio set on board.

Powering the monstrous ride is a twin-turbo V8 mated to a manual gearbox and capable of 880 PS (868 hp / 647 kW) and 1,046 Nm (771 lb-ft) of torque.

The mileage barely exceeds 3,000 km (1,860 miles), and Callaway performed complete maintenance on the car just three years ago.

The auction will end on May 23, and the current highest bid is already at U.S. $425,000.
